THE NANTUCKET HOTEL: LOBBY

inspiration

The design process for the Nantucket Hotel’s public space began with the long history of the hotel and the famous island it exists on. We started with the paint color, a deep, stormy yet serene blue, which created a rich canvas for the other choices. A combination of modern furniture pieces, custom seating and coffee tables, richly textured fabrics, and antique art pieces sourced throughout the Northeast married the themes of rich historical context and modernity.

The Julien Chichester sconce at the center of the bookcase acts as a focal point, surrounded by a constellation of tonal blue books, brass bells collected from various antique stores in New England, and curated paintings and prints. The custom upholstered bench brightens the vignette and is flanked by complimentary brass sconces and warm wood side tables which add depth and warmth to the palette.

Caned paneling and simple flat stock wood transformed the clunky and abrupt feeling of the originally ship-lapped and painted front desk; a simple yet effective design measure that brought warmth to the reception area. It is important to give every guest a beautiful and welcoming space that will set the tone for their stay and for the hotel. Twin vintage abacus lamps with custom wicker shades provide the perfect finishing touch. Finally, beloved by guests since the hotel opened, the animatronic whale still sits proudly, greeting people to the historic hotel and retaining the friendly hospitality of the original hotel.

Brass dome light fixtures reflect light across the glossy Holly Hunt hand-applied plaster ceiling covering, creating a studious glow over the library seating. Custom burled wood coffee tables, woven raffia chairs by Arteriors, and a beautiful plush velvet, pink, double backed sofa, thoughtfully separate the long space into smaller conversation groups. Hotel guests congregate around a chess board or enjoy an aperitif in the comfort and quiet of the library, which is completed by the historic symmetry of antique pieces such as the mahogany mirror, tambour ottoman, curated collection of amber glass, and assorted art pieces.
